And why did you not, when you
heard it, say? "It is not right of us to speak of this: Glory to God, this is a
most serious slander" (Quran 24:16)
A commentary on one of the most
destructive of major sins
Islam is a religion of peace, love and
compassion. Lies, suspicion, back biting, slander and gossip are totally alien
to Islam. In fact they are considered amongst the most destructive of major
sins. This is so because these sins sow enmity and discord among the Muslim
Ummah and lead to its destruction. They cause hostilities between people of the
same household, and between neighbors, friends and relatives.

Islam prohibits backbiting and slandering
Major sins are indeed the cause for all misery, evil and torment in this world and the hereafter.
And the worst of all sins are those that are greatest in harm and danger to humanity. Among the destructive major sins are backbiting and slandering. These two sins are forbidden by Allah because they sow enmity, evils and discord among people and lead to destruction. They cause hostilities between people of the same household and between neighbors and relatives. They can decrease in good deeds and increase in evil ones and lead to dishonor and ignominy.

How a Muslim defends his brother's honor?
Islam is a religion of peace, love and compassion. Lies, unjustified suspicion, backbiting, slander and gossips are totally alien to Islam. In fact they are considered amongst the most destructive of major sins.
The Evils of Backbiting
Backbiting – mere words – but they are words that bring upon the one who utters them shame and ignominy and that consign him to the Fire. Such a person has given in to his vain desires and succumbed to his destructive tendencies.
Backbiting and Gossiping
“Fear Allah and obey Him. Be afraid of the Day when you shall be brought back to Allah. Then every person shall be paid what he earned; and they shall not be dealt with unjustly” (Al-Baqarah 2: 281)
Exemptions from Backbiting
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

Muslim 'Happy Slapping'
I am sure that everyone has heard of the term "Happy slapping". It is the term used to describe the phenomenon of an individual or group (of teenagers generally), slapping or striking a stranger while an accomplice films the assault using a camera phone or smart phone.
Gheebah (Gossip, Backbiting)
Living in non-Muslim societies, it is easy for us to fall into the habits and customs of these lands. We start to set our moral compasses in relation to theirs. Sometimes, we go so far as to think that if what we are doing is better than what they are doing, its acceptable.
Backbiting
Definition of Gheebah
(Backbiting)
A backbiter is called
Mughtaab. Gheebah is to talk about your brother/sister in such a manner
that he/she would dislike it if told about it. Whether you talk about a physical
defect, lineage, manners, conduct, faith or even his clothes, house or mode of
transportation - all those constitute Gheebah.
